For several years, I've wanted a gas-powered Capstan Winch for snowmobile and rock-crawler rescue missions. Researched the market and bought a PCW4000 Off Road Kit from Portable Winch Company in Canada. Also bought several Portable Winch Company accessories. Very nice people to work with! Everything they advertised, everything they said, they performed, and more. Very honorable company, pleasure to do business with. Our first rescue mission; haul my M8 Arctic Cat from a steep Sierra Nevada mountainside, 100 ft down from a groomed snowmobile trail, 3-1/2 miles from road vehicle access. Don't ask how the M8 got down the mountainside all by itself, with no rider, must have a mind of its own, somehow missing all the big trees. Luckily, it wasn't damaged, caught on a small pine tree. The Portable Winch PCW4000 worked fantastic! Our planned rescue mission went better and faster than we envisioned. Was easy to learn how to use the PCW4000, added crankcase oil & gas, fired right up, did a test run at home pulling my ATV. Had four people for precaution and safety, job done! The PCW4000 centrifugal clutch, rope-holding anti-reverse mechanism, and auto-throttle are well-designed, strong, and work fantastic. Those features added greatly to the overall success of our mission and safe load control. Was easy to safely and reliably stop pulling, check with our team members, and resume the pull. Our M8 is back in our trailer, at home, safe and sound. Thanks Portable Winch Company! You folks are FANTASTIC !!

This is my first experience with a tool of this type. Historically, I've yarded out logs with a long chain and a truck and, while it worked, resetting the chain every 20 feet, and trying to control the pull up hills was a chore. I've only started with straight pulls to get experience, and haven't multiplied pulling power with pulleys yet. The engine starts reliably, and once the capstan got roughed up with a dirty rope, it pulls pretty well. The skidding cone is valuable in trashy environments, and I really like the pull actuated throttle feature. It's why I chose this model over the 5000, and it really is intuitive in practice. I don't know if I can update my review later, but if it's still working solidly after a season of clearing our land, I'd probably update the rating to 5 stars.

The Pcw4000 is one of the best Fire mitigation/tree removal tools that I own! I operate a fire mitigation company in the United States in some of the steepest mountains of Colorado. I own a Vermeer mini skid steer, but when it gets really steep I pull out this winch. Videos don’t do it justice! The thing can really pull! I choked three 16” diameter logs the other day, the whole load was well over a thousand pounds and i just dragged them straight up this hill in one pull. Use a snatch block or 2 and you can pull whole trees damn near anywhere! It’s perfect because I can still cut my logs long, drag them to the road, and grab them with my mini skid steer. I’m a land clearing machine with my tools, absolutely love it! Our friends to the north really made a quality product, then paired it with an indestructible Honda GX motor. Quit playing hanky panky and doing the hokey pokey and just buy it already! I guarantee you’ll love it as much as I do, and I’m a hard man to please tool wise. Also, their customer service is top notch. That’s huge in my book! All around great company, I’ll be back for more, Thanks!
